Rim of the World rivals the Malibu Hills for the sheer quantity of roads to choose from. Like Malibu, there can be a lot of tourist traffic out and about so you need to choose the time of day you go driving carefully.
It has been a while since I have driven these roads other than on the way to Snow Summit, and I have never driven them as a complete circuit so I have chosen not to rate them. However, they are the next on my list to test and I should have a current review within by the middle of September.
This area makes a great choice for a day drive, expecially for a group, because it offers so many choices. Hwy. 18 (red and blue on map) provide the backbone of the area, while Hwy. 330 (yellow) allows for a short loop and Hwy. 38 (purple) offers a much longer day of driving. You can even take Hwy. 138 (green) north-west to Angeles Crest Hwy. and make a loop in that direction.
While it is the shortest section of the area, the section of Hwy. 18 that climbs out of San Bernardino (blue) offers a very unique and very worthwhile driving section. The State has given us one of the best high-speed mountain roads you will find anywhere, because it is 2 lanes in each direction with a speed limit of 55mph all the way up the hill. Imagine if they put a freeway up the side of a mountain and you begin to get the picture. You can see in the satellite picture to the left a detail of what I am talking about. With large, sweeping corners and a fair amount of straightaways you can really keep your speed up. And almost any other mountain roads, traffic here is a good thing. Just pretend the other cars are lap traffic or mobile chicanes and enjoy life.
