MODJESKA CYN. & MODJESKA GRADE Date reviewed - 11/06 _________________________________ Fun . . . . . . . . 4 Difficulty . . . . .High Traffic . . . . . . Light Driveways . . . .Medium Condition . . . . Fair Length . . . . . .2.2 miles _________________________________ Modjeska Cyn. Rd. and Modjeska Grade Rd. are a pair of fun little, if strangely named, roads that serve as a bypass to Santiago Canyon. A friend of mine liked to call this road "Little Mulholland", which is perhaps a little generous for such a short stretch of pavement but it isn't a bad analogy. Starting from the south, you wind your way up the side of the hill at a pretty good climb rate. After reaching the top you run along the top of the "ridge" for a short time before dropping down the hill (watch out for the hairpin!) towards Santiago Cr. Mind you this all happens in a very short period of time with the two sections of road combined only stretching to just over 2 miles in length. From the intersection of Modjeska Grade and Modjeska Canyon (they meet at Santiago Creek) north you run through a tunnel of overhanging trees over a series of up-down rollercoaster style elevation changes before meeting back up with Santiago Canyon Rd. Regardless of whether you are heading north or south, watch out for the bridge at the creek as there is very limited sigh-lines for the very narrow bridge and intersection. Both on Modjeska Cyn. and above on Modjeska Grade there are enough houses and driveways to keep you on your toes. This isn't exactly suburbia but the road is very narrow with tight corners and limited visibility so it wouldn't do to come around a corner to fast and find someone backing their Suburban onto the street. From the intersection of the two streets, Modjeska Cyn. continues west for another mile before ending at a forest service road. The development is a little thicker on this leg of the road, and the prospect of having to turn around and driving right back through should keep hot-shoe drivers from making too much of this leg of the road. |

It's not very long, but it sure is fun. Watch out for that intersection.
Looks peaceful from above, but its pretty techincal at ground level. |
