Big Tujunga heads downhill from Angeles Forest Hwy. into Sunland and the 210 Freeway. The upper section is a pretty tight and twisty mountain road that begins to straighten out somewhat as you head west. Other than a few day use areas there aren't any driveways or cross streets in the upper section but as you get closer to town the houses and streets start to increase. Also, while most of the road has a 55mph speed limit the lower residential section drops to 45, and once turning due south (the road changes names to Oro Vista Ave.) the speed drops again to 35mph.

This road is fun but not quite the same as many of the others in the area. It does make a good alternative to Angeles Crest if you are heading into the foothills from the 210 south and should have less traffic than the section of Angeles Crest headed north out of La-Canada/Flintridge. NOTE: As with the upper section there are "Road Closed" barricades stationed on this road in case of possible last minute closures.

The pavement on Big Tujunga is in good shape for most of the upper section, but in the lower residential sections it is starting to deteriorate. For southbound traffic, watch out for the large section of roadway that has been washed out by the flooding of 2004 (see picture at right). Los Angeles Public Works' solution has been to simply re-route traffic over a poorly graded dirt patch, they haven't even put down temporary pavement and there are no signs of repairs being started as of 12/2005.

The jagged edge casting the shadow onto the riverbed is what is left of the roadway. The dark brown "arc" curving below it is the temporary dirt roadway.
