LONE PINE CANYON RD. Date reviewed - 2/06 _________________________________ Fun . . . . . . . . 3 Difficulty . . . . .Medium Traffic . . . . . . Medium Driveways . . . .None Condition . . . . Fair Length . . . . . .9 miles _________________________________ This is a nice little alternate to the eastern end of Angeles Crest Highway and Highway 138 to/from the 15 Freeway. While it is only about 9-miles long, it is actually shorter than taking 138 to Angeles Crest and there is less traffic to contend with. The northern end has a 35mph speed limit through town, but other than that the road is posted 55. There is a fairly large elevation change from the southern edge of town all the way to the 138, headed south is all downhill and uphill for northbound. The elevation change is especially noticeable just south of town (10% grade), with the majority of the road (center section) is somewhat more level and straight. With the exception of a few patch jobs towards the southern end, the pavement is in pretty good shape. In Wrightwood watch out for two steel-grate river crossings, in the wet they could be slippery. There are plenty of places to pass (legally) assuming there isn't too much oncoming traffic, so slower moving vehicles shouldn't be too much of a concern. The most fun section of the road is the 2-mile section at the southern end, where you wind your way up a fairly steep climb with enough curves and corners to keep you entertained. Motorcycles can have a lot of fun here, but if you are in a car you may get stuck behind traffic. This is a mountain road, so in winter months it is possible to find ice and snow on the roadway. At about the midpoint of the road is Lytle Creek Rd. (blue on map at right). This is a fairly long road that runs up to the top of the mountain and then back down again to the 15 Fwy near the Blockbuster Pavilion. The northern section of this road is dirt, but it looks like it is in pretty good shape. The southern section is paved and runs through a small town. I have not tried this road so I am not sure how well the dirt section is maintained. |

From Angeles Crest, follow the signs, Lone Pine Cyn. Rd. south, turn left on Thrush Rd., right on Heath Creek Dr., and then left back onto Lone Pine Cyn.
