SPUNKY CANYON RD. Date reviewed - 1/06 _________________________________ Fun . . . . . . . . 4 Difficulty . . . . .High Traffic . . . . . . Light to Medium Driveways . . . .None Condition . . . . Good Length . . . . . .6 miles _________________________________ The first time I drove this area I bypassed this road, and looking at the map later I didn't feel I missed out on anything. It so happened that I was in the area not much later on my bike and had the opportunity to try it out; I'm very glad I did. While the road is not very long, only about 5.5 miles of which 1.5 runs through town with a 35mph speed limit, those curves are much more severe than they look on the map with some good elevation changes thrown in for good measure. Top-speed is not the point of Spunky Canyon (can't they come up with a better name than that?), 2nd-gear and lock-to-lock is the name of the game here. Heading east out of town the road has some very tight hairpins and then drops down to the lake. After that it runs fairly straight for a mile or so until ending at Boquet Canyon Rd. While not necessarily a worth road in and of itself, when taken as a cut-through headed into or out of LA from the Grapevine area, or as a northern leg for a San Francisquito - Boquet Cyn. loop it makes a great diversion. |

A nice cut through from San Francisquito to Boquet.
The really crazy part.
